Paying for Amex Platinum and never opening the credits

Someone on X put it plainly this week. Paying for an Amex Platinum and never opening the credits tab is like buying a coupon book and never tearing out a single coupon.

Yes. That’s the whole sting.

I’m not writing the US Platinum fee story as if it were mine. My Platinum is the Hong Kong Amex Platinum. Different annual fee. Different credits. Different lounge rules. Mixing that catalog with the US Platinum everyone memes about is how people “optimize” a card they don’t hold.

I keep two Amex plastics in the stack, and they don’t share a Benefits tab.

The Hong Kong Platinum is the travel one — protections, Centurion where it exists, Priority Pass, and whatever statement credits that HK card actually carries. The US Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex is the hotel card — free-night certificate, Bonvoy earn, elite-night help toward Titanium. Different plastic. Different app. Swiping the metal and never opening Benefits is paying premium for a wallet prop.

What “never opening the credits” looks like isn’t dramatic. It’s quiet waste.

You pay for Priority Pass and still buy a sad sandwich at the gate. You have Centurion access on a day the lounge is usable — and you sit in the terminal anyway because you didn’t check. A statement credit expires while you pay cash for the same category out of habit.

I’ve already written about when the lounge wait is longer than the flight and whether lounges are still worth it. Those pieces are about the product. This one is dumber and more useful: did you even claim the thing you already paid for?

US blogs will list Uber money, streaming bundles, and a pile of monthly credits that sound great in USD. That is the US Platinum catalog.

My HK Platinum does not inherit that list by vibes. Credits, partners, and caps are local to the Hong Kong product. If a tip starts with “just use your Uber credit,” and you’re on HK Plat, stop. Open your Benefits page. Not a US YouTuber’s spreadsheet.

Same warning the other way: don’t treat Brilliant’s free night as an HK Platinum hotel credit. I already wrote about topping up a Brilliant free night into Bonvoy. That’s the US hotel card doing hotel-card work.

So I open the Amex app for the card I actually hold. I skim Benefits once in a while — not when the fee posts and I panic. I use the lounge or Priority Pass on trips where a chair beats the gate. I burn statement credits on stuff I’d buy anyway. I don’t invent spend to “win.” And I keep Brilliant’s free night and Bonvoy math on the Brilliant side of the wallet.

Paying for Platinum and never opening the credits isn’t mysterious. It’s a coupon book with the plastic wrap still on.

The fee only feels premium if the coupons get used. Otherwise it’s just a heavy piece of metal you photograph next to coffee once.

I’ll keep calling the credits what they are — used, or still sitting there.
