Movie Review: Spy (2015)

 Spy (2015) Spy (2015)

My Rating:

This evening I saw the movie Spy at UA Cine Times, Times Square, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies list, and the following is my movie review.

I had not written a movie review for some time, not to say that I had not been watching movies. In my opinion this was the best movie I watched this year; even after big names like Avengers: Age of UltronFurious Seven (2015) and Still Alice. That was saying a lot since I watch a lot of movies, both at the theater and via iTunes.

Melissa McCarthy was very good. Something I had expect, ever since I watched her performance in Identity Thief with the not so great Jason Bateman. This time around Melissa was partnered with two famous male actors: Jason Statham and Jude Law, who both have not had blockbusters movies for a while. This time around Jude played a pretty boy James Bond type who didn’t really have any talents, Jason played a guy with tough exterior, all-talk but soft inside.

Melissa’s natural stand-up comic side came out throughout the movie. I can imagine how enjoyable it would have been for the other actors on set. Making the director’s job even harder to stay on track as Paul Feig had envisioned it.

If you’re looking for a fun night out this is definitely a sure bet.

Movie Review: Hangover Part 2

The Hangover Part II 500x150
The Hangover Part II 500×150

My Rating:

 Waste your time elsewhere

This afternoon I saw the movie Hangover Part 2 at AMC Cinemas, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies list, and the following is my movie review.

In the past several months I have seen many sequels to franchises and this have to be one of the worst one. The original had the surprise and twists of a fairly engaging story. This time it is just a rehash of all the same encounters with the same types of characters and antagonists, but set in Bangkok and Thailand resort area, Phulay Bay Ritz Carlton, Krabi. If you really wants to you can visit all the places the characters went to in Bangkok.

The movie try to give the story some twists but they were shallow, easy to figure out and did not offer enough intrigue. Therefore to shock the audiences and give them something to think about, the director decides to introduce various frontal nudity. Starting from 10 minutes into the movie, to full frontal nudity of transvestists who are half transformed. I am very surprise this movie is not “R” or “III” rated given those scenes. It is definitely not a movie that under ages should be watching.

If this movie is the only choice at your box office. I suggest you go have a nice dinner with your partner/love one instead.

This evening I saw the movie Just Go With It at AMC Cinemas, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

Movie Review: No Strings Attached

My Rating: 3Stars

This evening I saw the movie No Strings Attached at AMC Cinemas, Admiralty, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

It is a romantic comedy staring Natalie Portman (Emma) and Ashton Kutcher (Adam), playing two life long friends who have sex one morning. In an effort to protect their friendship, they decide to make a pack to keep their relationship as “no strings attached” (aka. friends with benefits). The movie has made popular a quote among the social networks.

What I need is someone who’s going to be in my bed in 2 a.m. who I don’t have to lie to or eat breakfast with… Use each other for sex at all hours of the day and night, nothing else.

Portman definitely carries this movie where the rest of the actors done an okay job of supporting her. Even though Kutcher has an equal billing for this movie, his role is nothing special. It’s similar and at times identical to all other roles he played in the past: Killers, Valentine’s Day and What Happens in Vegas.

On the other hand I have enjoyed Portman’s performances since her role as Mathilda in Luc Besson’s The Professional, then as Queen Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Evey in V for Vendetta.

This a fun entertaining movie to watch with your love one. It is definitely a good option if there’s nothing else to choose from at the theater.

Movie Review: Date Night

My Rating: 3Stars

This evening I saw the movie Date Night at AMC Cinemas, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

This is a cops and robbers story with a nice twist. The main characters are mistaken for the robbers when in fact they are just a boring suburban couple (“The Fosters”) played by Steve Carell and Tina Fey. The Maxwell Smart character of Get Smart that Carell played in 2008 was all over the Phil Foster character. Don’t get me wrong it was the perfect way to play the Foster character.

Movie Review: Old Dogs (2009)

My Rating: 4Stars

This evening I saw the movie Old Dogs at JP Theater, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

With Seth Green in this movie I had expected it to be a slapstick comedy. Even with John Travolta, who has done great movies: Wild Hogs, Ladder 49, Swordfish, et., in the past I was a bit skeptical. Fortunately, these are not the only two main actors in the movie, there’s also the Oscar winning Robin Williams, whom I believe have yet to appear is a bad movie; well may be RV was an exception to that rule. At almost 60, Williams is still able to carry the movie on his own with Travolta playing more as a sidekick and supporting actor.

Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes (2009)

My Rating: 3Stars

This evening thanks to NeonPunch.com I saw the movie premier Sherlock Holmes at JP Theater, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

If you are a fan of Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes novels then you will have been looking forward to this version of the movie for some time. For this movie they casted Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Holmes sidekick, Dr. John Watson. The villain this time is Lord Blackwood played by Mark Strong, and the romantic distraction is Irene Adler played by My Name Is Tanino‘s Rachel McAdams.

Movie Review: Jennifer’s Body

My Rating: 2Stars

This afternoon I saw the movie Jennifer’s Body at UA Cinema, Times Square, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

This is a comedy thriller staring the Transformers famed Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried from Mamma Mia!. It is about a young girl living in a small town that has an unlikely best friend, with very little in common, who ends up being possessed by satan, and starts to kill boys in a high school. As you can tell from the description it is a very Buffy-the-Vampire-Killer like plot.
