This evening I saw the movie Old Dogs at JP Theater, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. One of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

With Seth Green in this movie I had expected it to be a slapstick comedy. Even with John Travolta, who has done great movies: Wild Hogs, Ladder 49, Swordfish, et., in the past I was a bit skeptical. Fortunately, these are not the only two main actors in the movie, there's also the Oscar winning Robin Williams, whom I believe have yet to appear is a bad movie; well may be RV was an exception to that rule. At almost 60, Williams is still able to carry the movie on his own with Travolta playing more as a sidekick and supporting actor.

This movie had a fairly simple plot executed well by Walt Becker. It is about a busy successful man finding the priorities in his life, and pursing them at all cost. Overall there are many touching moments while at the same time contains the humor that is famous in Williams' films.

This is definitely a must see for Williams fans and anyone else who enjoy a happy fun night out to the movies.

This afternoon I saw the movie Law Abiding Citizen at AMC Theater, Admiralty, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

Most surprising part of this movie is the role of Gerard Butler who is most known for Beowulf and 300. In this movie Butler began as a victim who had his family murdered in front of him and then getting even after the justice system failed to convict the ones responsible. So far this does not sound too unusual but the way Butler's character got even and the character's background made the movie interesting for me, giving it a feel of MacGyver.

If you like The Bourne Identity movie franchise you will like this movie.

This afternoon I saw the movie 2012 at AMC Theater, Admiralty, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

Normally I make a point not to get into details of the plot of the movie, but I will make an exception for this movie. The movie is about the destruction of the Earth due to solar flares causing the core of the Earth to over heat and making the crust unstable.

Like many recent movies from Hollywood, this movie also attempts to teach the audiences a lesson. This time the lesson is about the fragile planet Earth and how everything are interrelated. Unfortunately, this will be the only good thing to take away from this movie.

If you go to this movie expecting a captivating plot and storyline you will be greatly disappointed. Of course the movie has a storyline, but it is not complicated nor did it have any twists or turns. The most impressive moments in the movie are from the special effects. It is a movie filled with some of the best special effects from Hollywood. Creating some of the most spectacular scenes in any movie.

The movie reminds me a bit of War of the Worlds from 2005 staring Tom Cruise. In that the lead is struggling to gain the confidence from his children, while trying to save them and the human race from ultimate destruction. John Cusack had not have much luck with movies in the past except may be Runaway Jury, and there's no difference this time.

I suggest you give this a miss unless you are into special effects.

There were several scenes involving the Chinese government in Tibet that will most likely cut when the movie is shown in mainland China. So if you still want to see this movie, make sure you watch the uncut version from outside of mainland China.

This evening I saw the movie The Time Traveler's Wife at UA Cinema, Times Square, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

The movie's plot is different from what the title implies and not unlike the 2001 Kate & Leopold with Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman, or the 2006 The Lake House with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. All three movies use the concept of moving between times to deliver a love story that cannot happen.

In this latest movie, Eric Bana (Henry DeTamble) of Hulk fame, delivered a very good performance playing the time traveller who has no control of which time he jumps to or when.

The only thing consistent is that he will always return to significant life events, in all cases he cannot alter the outcome of his past and future. For this sort of movies, the audiences cannot go in thinking everything in the movie will be believable, you have to go in with the attitude that the movie will try to capture you and take you away to an imaginary world.

Usually I gage the ability of a movie the capture my full attention by whether I notice the areas around the screen, rows in front or the people next to me. During this movie I did all three. At times the movie was a bit slow, it had scenes that repeats but did not offer additional information to the plot of enrich the story in any way. This is the main reason it lost one of the penguins from my rating.

If you are a romantic you will enjoy this movie. It has all the elements of a romantic drama, love story that cannot happen, lovers that are kept apart, in this case the condition of time travelling. This is the reason this movie retains the 3 penguins of my rating.

This afternoon I saw the movie Surrogates at UA Cinema, Times Square, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

Like the many other Bruce Willis movies in the past Surrogates also had a chase scene.

The plot is a fairly typical, but the story had a future element to make it fresh, but not so much so that present day audiences cannot relate to. The movie updated the audiences the background of the story's past 14 years in the first 5 minutes of the movie. This became the premise for the pace of movie. As it is one of the shorter big Hollywood productions at just 89 minutes.

The key message this movie tries to deliver, is that we should spend more time with real life, in-person interactions, rather than Social Networks, avatars and the use of other surrogates to portray a different persona.

I find the story telling well done, the fact that the director and producers were able to deliver the message in just 89 minutes, amazing. If the movie was any longer it will have been too long, any shorter the audiences will be left hanging.

If you are a fan of Willis and the fan of the Die Hard franchise you will not be disappointed. Even If you're not this movie will make you think about your use of services like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, SIMS, SecondLife, World Of Warcraft and alike, so it is a must see.

This afternoon I saw the movie The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 at AMC Theater, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

Denzel Washington gave a great performance. This time he played a more humble character compared to the roles in has past movies like: Deja Vu, The Bone Collector, Crimson Tide, etc. On the other hand John Travolta played the bad guy character we come to love and expect, as he had done so well in Face Off and Broken Arrow. I always use the measurements of whether the actor made me hate the antagonist character to judge whether the performance was good.

The plot might have been regular but they added a touch of modern relevance to make it a bit more interesting. Although it was simple enough that audiences who had read the book or saw the 1974 version may find the movie boring. The stunts and special effects were borderline believable and made the movie that much more interesting. I wish they had add the twist that whole audience expect. I will not say any more to avoid spoiling the movie for any readers who had not seen it.

For fans of Washington and/or Travolta this is another must see.

This evening I saw the movie Brothers Bloom at AMC Theater, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

It has been a while since a movie offered a surprising plot. I was glad to say that this one did and that was the reason for one of the penguins above.

Adrien Brody gave a very good performance as "Bloom", but I see the same character he played in his famous role as "Wladyslaw Szpilman" in the movie The Pianist. On the other hand Mark Ruffalo gave a typical B-movie role as he always did in the past, even though, Ruffalo was suppose to be a co-star in the movie. Rachel Weisz, the other lead in this movie had a pretty good performance, unlike the other movies she appeared in like, The Mummy Returns.

A surprise performance came from Rinko Kikuchi who played "Bang Bang". This was Kikuchi's second American movie since Babel in 2006. I had not seen any of Kikuchi's Japanese movies but Babel was pretty bad. I think her English is not that good, which was perfect for the "Bang Bang" character, as she did not speak much, makingher acting even more important to the role.

The other thing that earned a penguin in my rating was the wardrobe. Both Brody and Weisz had beautiful clothes, which reminds me why I love Winter weather clothing.

I did not have this movie on my Must See Movies list before I saw the movie and I'm glad to have added it to the list. I think if you were like me and saw all that was at the theater, you may want to give this one a try.

This afternoon I saw the movie Knowing at AMC Theater, Pacific Place, Admiralty, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

After watching the poor performance of Dwayne Johnson in Race to Witch Mountain last week, I was glad to watch a seasoned actor, Nicolas Cage, delivering a great performance. Although Cage's performance is only great when compared to Johnson, here Cage was playing his "Ben Gates" character from National Treasure.

The thing that earned this movie an extra penguin in my rating was the story and the twists in the plot. It did not have as complicated of a plot as National Treasure, but contains enough suspense for the audience to want more. Without breaking my rule of no spoilers, there is really not much more I can say about the movie.

I can leave you with the following detail, as with I Am Legend the ending of this movie is a bit unexpected.

Vinko's Must See Movies list 其中之一。

This afternoon I saw the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at UA Cinema, Time Square, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Another one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

The plot of the movie is fairly typical but with a special twist. It is about a man, Benjamin Button (played by Brad Pitt), who was born with an old man's body and died as a baby.

The special effects and makeup were quite amazing. Although one would not expect special effects to play an important role for a movie like this. It enabled the team to transform Pitt, a 46 years old in real life, into a young teenager. The other side of the transformation was to make Pitt into a convincing 70 years old, which was the creativity of makeup artist, Greg Cannom.

Cannom's artisan included the transformation of Pitt's body into an old man's, along with sagging chest and flabby stomach. This efforts earned him an Oscar nomination, "Achievement in Makeup".

For some reasons this movie reminded me of Tim Burton's Big Fish (2003). I guess it was the cinematography and the fantasy nature of the plot. There is a questionable yet believable feel for the events that transpire throughout the movie.

Pitt delivered his usual great performance, convincing the audience he was indeed the age the character was going through. Enough so that it earned him an Oscar nomination for "Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role". One of his supporting actresses, Taraji P. Henson also had a great performance, earning an Oscar nomination herself for "Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role". In total the movie racked up 13 nominations at the 81st Oscars to be held on February 22nd.

This is definitely a movie for fans of Pitt, but anyone into fantasy and stories of Eric Roth should not miss either.

This evening I saw the movie What Just Happened at JP Theater, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Not one of the movies from my Must See Movies list.

In a short several weeks I went from a 5 penguins rating movie to one that I am reluctant to give 1 penguin. I really should have known given it is a movie from Magnolia Pictures. I just thought, given it was staring Robert De Niro and with big stars like: Bruce WillisSean Penn and Stanley Tucci it cannot be that bad. Was I wrong!!

What can I say about this movie? It is boring, the plot is simple and does not capture the audience. The acting overall are weak. Bruce Willis plays an overweight, unreasonable, snob of himself. De Niro is an over the hill hollywood producer whose twice divorced that is grabbing onto his career by the thread.

Not only is this the worst movie this year. I can say it is a runner up to the worst movie I've ever seen.
