iTunes’ Ping Facebook Application Killed

When I signed onto iTunes Ping this morning (HK time) I was able to connect my account to my Facebook account to locate my Facebook friends who are already on Ping.

Later on in the morning I start to encounter problems with the Facebook connection. It first thinks that I am no longer connected, then when I try to reconnect it has trouble reaching Facebook.

After a few more attempts the Facebook Connect button on the Ping Home page in iTunes disappeared.

Did Apple kill the Ping Facebook application? Or did Facebook killed it because it stressed Facebook’s API infrastructure too much?

  1. Thanks for your compliments.I believe the initial restriction for Ping is for users who have an account at an iTunes Store that sells music tracks. These include 6 countries: US, Canada, UK, France, Germany and Australia. So if you have an account in any of those iTunes Stores you will have access to Ping right now, and may be later this year when Apple add more iTunes Stores that sell music tracks. Or when Apple open Ping to include other type of media.

  2. I am from Lebanon, and logged in through my account of Lebanon, after researching all day, I found out that the PING service is unavailable to non-US or well at least Lebanese, some Europeans, and Latin Americans… Discrimination by Apple? Like the “Places” trend Facebook started? I think this deserves it’s own thread 😀

Thank You Vinko, Great Blog 😀

  3. Yep, I had the same problem. Either way Apple needs to get that back up ASAP. That’s where a vast majority of their early users are going to come from.

  4. When I signed in to my iTunes account, the PING icon totally disappeared from iTunes. Now when I press on following you on PING, iTunes store gives out an error, saying: “We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The iTunes store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.” This is so not like Apple. This better be fixed and fast.
